Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is a book written by Pulitzer Prize author Isabel Wilkerson. Her book links the caste systems of America, India and Nazi Germany illustrating how the artificial hierarchy of caste has determined the livelihood of each group that makes up these nations. Wilkerson identities 8 pillars of a caste, and to showcase a visual depiction of such a system, I painted and photographed toy blocks that were mounted onto one another. My intention of this project is to capture the simple, yet rigid structures that represent the systems that have stood for centuries, and while they can be very inflexible, they can still be broken down.
